A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's key public works projects.
The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” declared the country's president.
The official reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the year before. This project was intimately linked to his government's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The development of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, beating forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled significant questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party demanded an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This pause was suggested pending a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "calls for swift accountability."
In response, the president maintained that the train had been running in full compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these national projects.
