Seven alleged individuals of Germany's far-left organization face trial over multiple violent incidents

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost went on trial on this week, facing charges for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

Global terror listing and legal charges

Earlier this month, the US government classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization together with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany claim the network was behind attacks on locations in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several severely injured.

Court proceedings and international connections

The trial involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, named as Johann G and Paul M., are additionally accused for violent incidents in Budapest during February 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honor” that attracts far-right participants from across Europe.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T, is currently on trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis prior to the same rally in 2023.

Historical background and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, tasked with planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. At depots overseen by the suspect, the network allegedly accumulated hammers, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E, emerged as a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the American economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany welcomed the American move and urged the German administration to take similar action. However, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The danger from the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and particularly violent members have either received convictions or remain detained.”
